Diego Rivera
Born on December 8, 1886, in Guanajuato, Mexico, Diego Rivera sought to make art that reflected the lives of the Mexican people. In 1921, through a government program, he started a series of murals in public buildings. Some were controversial; his Man at the Crossroads in New York City's RCA building, which featured a portrait of Vladmir Lenin, was stopped and destroyed by the Rockefeller family. Alfredo Ramos Martinez born November 12th 1871 was a painter, muralist and educator, who lived and worked on Paris, Mexico and Los Angeles. Best known for his serene and empathetic paintings of traditional Mexican people and scenes he is often considered by many to be the 'Father of Mexican Modernism'. Renowned poet Ruben Dario wrote, "Ramos Martinez is one of those who paints poems; he does not copy, he interprets; he understands how to express the sorrow of the fisherman and the melancholy of the village." David Alfaro Siqueiros
David Alfaro Siqueiros born December 29th 1896, painted frescoes on the walls of the National Preparatory School and began organizing and leading unions of artists and workingmen. His Communist activities led to numerous jailings and periods of exile. He produced thousands of square feet of wall paintings in which numerous social, political and industrial changes were portrayed from a left-wing perspective. Alice Rahon
Alice Marie Yvonne Philppot also know as Alice Rahon was born June 8th 1904 in Chency-Buillon, Quingey in Eastern France. She was a renowned French/Mexican poet and artist, who contributed to the beginning of abstract expression in Mexico. Her work was also tied to surrealism but still continued to contain elements and techniques generally used in abstract art. She had a large number of exhibitions in Mexico and the United States from the 1940s to the 1960s with a wide circle of friends in both countries.
